Private Downloader saves the video playing on the current page as one file you can play anywhere. Start the video, click the toolbar button, and choose Download video.

What it saves

• Direct video files (MP4, WebM, MOV, M4V, and Ogg), including signed addresses, videos in embedded players, and files a page fetches itself and plays from memory.
• HLS streams: transport-stream, fragmented-MP4, and audio-only segments, AES-128 encryption, separate audio tracks, and live streams recorded until you press Stop.
• DASH streams with separate video and audio, live DASH, and multi-period programmes joined into one file. Smooth Streaming too.
• Players that keep their source out of reach, through Record playback, up to eight times faster than real time.
• H.264, HEVC, MPEG-2, VP9, and AV1 video with AAC, MP3, AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, Opus, or Vorbis audio, repackaged without re-encoding, so the quality is exactly what the site sent.
• Subtitles and closed captions inside the video and as a .vtt file; subtitles drawn as pictures as a .sup file. Ad breaks a stream marks are left out.

Built not to fail halfway

Pause and resume any stream download. A dropped connection is waited out. Close the tab or quit Firefox, and the download resumes later from the same place. Streams are assembled on your disk, so there is no size limit, and a stream that cannot be saved whole is refused with a reason rather than saved without its audio or video.

Private by design

No account, no server, no telemetry, no ads, and no remote code or remote configuration; the add-on collects no data. Videos are fetched only from the site you are watching and assembled inside Firefox. The license key is checked on your device and never phones home. Private windows and containers keep their own identity. If something fails, the popup writes a report with no page addresses, titles, tokens, or cookies for you to read before you send it.

Everyday use

Choose the quality, audio language, subtitles, or audio only; rename the file; pick a folder; select several videos at once; paste a link; or right-click a video, or press Alt+Shift+S, to save it straight away. A local history keeps your last fifty saves. It works in Firefox for Android too, and speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese.

Free and paid

Every download, file or stream, uses one of ten free saves, with no cooldowns and no daily caps; a download that fails or is canceled gives its save back. Not supported

DRM-protected and sample-encrypted streams, and sites that block downloads. Private Downloader never bypasses logins, paywalls, or access controls.
