Lumen Read turns your browser into a private, distraction-free EPUB reader designed to make reading comfortable, consistent, and personal.

Keep the story readable

Some EPUBs keep dark text even when you switch to a dark theme. Optional Adaptive presentation (LPE, Beta) helps repair low-contrast text and supported layout problems while preserving the book’s colors and styling where possible—instead of simply making everything the same shade.

Turn it on in Theme. Results depend on the EPUB, and not every problem can be repaired. You can switch it off at any time.

Page counts and finish estimates depend on the book, reading layout, and available history; they are estimates, not fixed printed-page measurements or guaranteed outcomes.

Keep a backup of what matters

Export your entire library or selected books to a local backup ZIP, including EPUB files, covers, annotations, saved reading positions, and saved chats. You can choose whether to include global preferences and reading history.

Local backups do not require a library upload. Backup ZIPs are not encrypted, so keep them somewhere private.

An optional assistant for the book you’re reading

Lumen Read includes a book-aware AI assistant that can retrieve relevant excerpts, answer questions about the current book, and help rewrite selected text.

AI is always opt-in. You choose the provider and model and explicitly allow the connection. Compatible local models are also supported. Your API key is not stored in browser local storage. AI answers can be inaccurate; check important claims against the book.

Your library, private by default

Your books and ordinary reading data stay in your browser storage by default. Reading local books does not require an account. Lumen Read has no ads or built-in usage telemetry, and published extension builds do not run Sentry telemetry.

Optional AI and Dropbox features connect only after your explicit action. When you use a remote service, relevant data is sent to the provider you select. Lumen Read requires no subscription; external providers may have their own requirements or charges.

Lumen Read is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. It is an enhanced fork of the Flow reader project.
