A field guide to the bots of Reddit.

Rest your mouse on any username on Reddit. Botanist reads the account’s public posts and comments, estimates how likely it is to be a bot and shows you exactly why.

What you get

• A clear scale. From −100 (pretty sure human) through 0 (uncertain) to +100 (pretty sure bot). With little data the value stays near the middle.
• Reasons, not just a number. Every score comes with the signals behind it, for example account age, suspiciously regular timing, copy-pasted comments, karma farming or posting at all hours.
• Top subreddits. Where the account is active. Click one to see that person’s posts there.
• Top keywords. The words the account uses most, without filler. Click a keyword to open Reddit’s own search for exactly those posts. The + and − buttons show more or fewer words.
• Location clues (estimate). Posting times, place-related subreddits and language can hint at a region. This is a rough guess and labelled as such.
• Live view. The window opens at once and fills while the history is read, up to 500 posts and comments (the newest plus the best rated).
• Pin, move and resize. Keep a window on screen while you scroll and open several to compare accounts.
• Colour dots next to names you have already checked. Known service bots such as AutoModerator are marked in purple.

Private by design

Botanist has no server of its own. The analysis runs in your browser, and results are stored only on your computer. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no ads. Botanist reads public profile data from reddit.com using your own Reddit login.

Please note

• Scores are estimates, not proof. Real people can look bot-like and careful bots can look human. Do not treat a score as an accusation.
• You need to be logged in to Reddit, because Reddit no longer allows anonymous access to profile data.
• Some users hide their post history. Botanist tells you when that is the case.
• Botanist is an independent project and not affiliated with Reddit.
